I decided that since I was putting on the PI intake I would port the heads a little to match it. Now, I'm not a pro at this, so don't expect a whole lot from me. This is just to give other people an idea of what can be done.

There are no drain back holes in the valley to get to the oil pan. Everything else is covered. If something does make it through, it'll be small enough not to damage anything. More then likely it'll get melted in the combustion chamber. It's not the first time I've grinded on something on top of a motor. And besides, if the motor does blow, I'll have an excuse to get the stroker I've been wanting.

IMO...very very very very very very very BAD IDEA :eyes: ...All the aluminum will kill your engine, I gurantee it...Also, porting heads without out a flow bench, is like porting with a blind-fold on.....I'll give you a "B" for bravery, and I hope it works out for you...DA snake boy!!!

I agree. Plus each port will flow a different amount, if it's changed at all. Porting is more than just increasing the volume of the port. If it's not done properly, you'll lose velocity

Ok folks, I'm not a beginner at this shit. I was just saying I'm not a pro so people didn't start going off on the lack of precision. I'm not increasing the size of the entire port. I'm just opening up the top to match the intake. All I wanted was to get rid of the huge step that was in there. Which I did. If you actually look at the pics you'll notice I just rounded the top part of the port. I didn't really open it up. As for the aluminum, there isn't any getting into the engine. I have all the ports blocked. And a very small, and very good vacuum to get what is in there out before I pull the plugs out.

Rob, no one said you were a beginner but take a step back and look at it from our POV. It isn't every day you see someone do port work on an engine component that is still attached to the engine. No one is talking shit just tellin you how it is. You have to admit, it isn't the best way to do it. I hope it works out for you but IMO it's a ton of work for almost no gains.
I still love you :iluvu: I'll give you a hug when I see you

Bobo is right, I go by Bob. I've actually been meaning to tell Shaun to change that.
Sorry about the blow up, but a guy can only take so much negativity. As for the time spent, I think total it's about 2 hours. Which really isn't much to me. As for the grinding on something attatched to a motor, it ain't my first time and I doubt it'll be my last. And if the motor goes, it goes and I say I was wrong. If it works, then cool, something else I can brag about doing myself.

I figured it was wrong when I typed it, but I was to lazy to double check it. I wonder how I can explain how my car caught on fire in the middle of a parking lot to my insurance? Oh well, they've seen my record, it probably wouldn't surprise them.
I'm actually amused by most of what's being said. It seems that a lot of people forgot that hot rodding used to be done in people's driveways and garages, not in some big name tuners shop.

Holy wowsers batman, word is travelling. Seems alot of people aren't agreeing with it. Bob has done this before, plus the PI intake is guaranteed to free up hp with a tune. I think it's gonna work. Well, I got it back together this morning. I went through and wiped everything down with wet towel. So short of washing it down with a hose I did everything I could to clean it. It started right up and smoothed out after a few seconds. It even sounds a little throatier. Now the bad news, I have to take it all apart again tomorrow. One of the gaskets shifted when putting the intake on. I thought it was ok, but I guess it messed up the RTV. So now when I rev it a nice little stream shoots out from the back of the manifold. So I know what I'm doing tomorrow afternoon. At least it wasn't making any death sounds. Oh Emerson, the hood closes fine with the intake and a plenum spacer.

well if any of those keyboard drag racers take the time to read this thread, they'll see that there have been no problems with the car yet...so it looks to be a well done job.
But it's so much easier to just look at the first page and jump to conclusions.

sweet port job, i like how the ricers at club si who have no experience are chiming in. i jimmy port heads all the time. but yea they were off the car but still have the valves in them. which is basically the same as having them sitting on the car lol :spin:

It never made it to the dyno. I traded the car in about a month later for the Cobra. I know it ended up in an impound yard about 3 months after I got rid of it.

FWIW - I did some porting/polishing on the exhaust ports of the Exploder engine in my 81 when the heads/valves were still intact on the engine while on the stand.
Obivously not an optimal job, but better than nothing.

Last I heard the car was in an impound yard in Anaheim. Granted that was back in 06 or 07. If you can track it down you can take new pics.
